OCTOBER so far: peckers and primroses

October 7, 2009

Great spotted woodpeckerExciting wet Wednesday news from the roof.

Today, while peering out of our steamy bathroom window, I heard an odd tapping noise coming from the sycamore tree in our downstairs neighbour’s garden.  It was a great spotted woodpecker – hurrah!  This is my not terribly impressive picture of the pecker, he was pretty hard to photograph.

Also today, an evening primrose bloomed out of the blue.  I had a few flowers this summer but I thought the plant was long dead.  The yellow petals looked rather brilliant dripping with autumn rain.

The squirrel continues to eat half a tomato and then deposit the rest in a flower pot.  He seems to like leaving the chewed remains in the lemon balm best.

And those exotic looking bugs are getting bigger by the minute…
