APRIL the flowers before the fruits
The rooftop garlic crop is looking handsome and healthy at the moment. The plants are growing tall and elegant, and one is just bursting into flower. The strong-tasting leaves are great both cooked and raw, and the flower will be edible too. If I swallow my sentimentality and bring myself to pick it, it could make a very pretty – and potent – addition to a salad.
The hanging strawberry basket, which swings beneath our bathroom window, has been full of white daisy-like flowers for about a week. When I throw open the window to let out clouds of steam after a shower, I can see berries slowly growing fat behind the petals.
Soon fresh picked red berries and just dug up cloves will be mine…
