Rooftop adventure talk in Dulwich
Rooftop Adventures in the Wilds of London
A talk with new author Helen Babbs and friends
22nd June, 7.30pm-8.30pm, Alleyn Park Garden Centre, West Dulwich, SE21 8ES
A Dulwich Books event
Helen Babbs’ first book ‘My Garden, the City and Me – Rooftop Adventures in the Wilds of London’ is published on the 21st June this year.
Beautifully written and illustrated, the book’s about the glory of growing things, nature and a side of London that’s not often explored. It reveals how much wildlife a city can support and inspires readers to see built-up spaces in new ways. Helen’s rooftop is the main character in a book that’s also an ode to how satisfying urban gardening can be, no matter how hopeless at it you are.
Helen will be joined by four friends to talk about the aerial adventures there are to be had in London. This talk will give you ideas for trips around town and for your garden – whether it’s a floating one or more down to earth.
Alongside a few short readings from the book…
Elaine Hughes, RHS gold medal winner and expert wildlife gardener, will talk about boat-top growing and share stories from her barge garden.
David Lindo, broadcaster and writer, aka the Urban Birder, will talk about raptor watching from one of the tallest buildings in London and other birding exploits.
John Little, from the Grass Roof Company, will tell you everything you need to know about living roofs and why London needs more of them.
Hedvig Murray, who Helen named her first London bicycle after, will talk about community growing and permaculture in urban areas.
They’ll be time for questions at the end, and signed copies of Helen’s book for sale.
